Preludes of the sea

“Preludes of the Sea” is a journey that starts from the Mediterranean, cradle of a musical variety that has no equal in the world, and lands on distant shores, where the element of water is visual, sensory, and symbolic. The incessant movement, amplitude, scents, colours and an infinite variety of sensations are evoked by Claudio Farinone’s music, which oscillates between scores written by various beloved composers, personal compositions, arrangements, and improvisations. Each performance is unique because it starts from a principle of freedom, within a precise formal structure.

It starts in Naples, with the music of Domenico Scarlatti, moves on to Spain with some traditional music, and then returning to Italy to build bridges with the music of Ralph Towner, Pat Metheny, and Egberto Gismonti, masters of the guitar who have always inspired Claudio Farinone’s music.

The sea is the common thread, as inspiration and evocation.

Claudio Farinone

Claudio Farinone is a guitarist and composer. After graduating in classical guitar, he completed numerous masterclasses and achieved awards at international competitions. Claudio began a varied concert activity performing solo, with chamber ensembles such as Tanguediaduo, Torres Quartet, Aries 4. He has been playing with some of the leading jazz artists and improvised music performers in Italy such as Fausto Beccalossi, Raffaele Casarano, Elias Nardi, Bebo Ferra, Javier Girotto, and Max Pizio. He has been working in theatre and music projects with actors David Riondino, Clara Galante, and Pamela Villoresi. He has recorded numerous CDs including “Claudio Farinone plays Ralph Towner,” dedicated to the famous American guitarist and composer with whom he performed in a concert in 2017.

He has recently released the CD “Playing love,” a duo with accordionist Fausto Beccalossi, dedicated to the music of Ennio Morricone. Claudio employs different instruments: classical, baritone, eight-string, flamenco, and electric guitars. Over time, these instruments have forged the characteristic features of his musical language, which draws on interpretations, compositions, and improvisational paths.

For over twenty years, he has been a radio presenter for Swiss public radio station RSI Rete Due, where he regularly hosts music programmes. In addition, he produces special in-depth features with some of the great protagonists of contemporary music and culture.
